Collecting & Recyling
Potential Space - Zwischenräume
Das stratigraphische Bild
Vermessung & Notation

English Version:

By “photofilms”, we understand films that essentially consist of photographs. They challenge our visual habits and permit us to think cinema. Photofilms require active, reflective viewers, for as soon as the still image occurs in a film, it invites us to contemplate, and we are pleased at seeing more. Thus, photofilms are experimental laboratories which allow to think the filmic anew and conduct a discourse on the still image in a cinematographic context between film, photography and media art.
The practical course presents strategies of photo film and experimental positions of authors such as Hubert Fichte, Leonore Mau, Agnés Varda, Takashi Ito, Georg Griffin, Silke Grossmann, Shelly Silver, Miranda Pennell, Paul de Nooijer, Ken Jacobs, Sirkka-Liisa Konttinnen, Gusztáv Hámos, Katja Pratschke and others. The following contents will be presented and discussed:
How Much Movement Does the Image Need?
The Filmic Photographic
The Plasticity of the Moment
Recall & Memory
Collecting & Recyling
Potential Space & interspaces
The stratigraphic image
Surveying & Notation

During the semester, students elaborate own photo films from the idea to the completion of the cine-matographic work. They learn to work with the camera, are introduced to sound recording and editing, develop their own concepts for photographic notation methods and test these.
Theoretical texts of Bergson, Barthes, Deleuze, Bellour, Blümlinger and others on the theory of photofilm, especially on the contradiction of moving/non-moving—which denotes a fundamental conflict in our per-ception, intellectual understanding and language—are introduced and reflected.
