Sculpture

Contemporary sculpture, three-dimensional composition and formative spatial expression make use the entire range of media in the broadest sense of the word. The staff who teach the course Fine Arts / Sculpture cultivate sculptural thinking and encourages students to consider what lies “behind” things and events. The structure of the sculpture course is characterised by the flexibility of the teaching sessions; students are not divided into classes or year levels.

In the first two semesters, students attend the artistic and academic foundation course. In the advanced study period, students are taught in groups which are allowed to develop organically according to students’ interests. This approach helps develop personal responsibility and independence.

The central teaching methods are individual instruction and project work, which guarantees that each student receives intensive support. Sharing and comparing ideas with other study courses at the Berlin Weissensee School of Art and other schools in Germany and abroad is encouraged. Students are acquainted with various domains of knowledge and must complete compulsory courses, as a way of increasing their skills. These courses cover areas such as artistic techniques, the study of materials and exercises in form and space. However, the special focus of the course is placed on developing sculptural intelligence, without which independent, artistic creative work is impossible.

Applicants to the course Fine Arts / Sculpture must demonstrate a particular artistic aptitude. A general qualification for university entrance is preferred. Artistic aptitude will be tested in an examination.

Students on the Sculpture course graduate after ten semesters (five years).
