Registration for aptitude test / Study start October 2021: Nov 1 - Dec 10 2020

The next registration period for the aptitude test starts again on 1 November and ends on 10 December 2020 for the winter semester 2021/22!  An application is always only possible for the winter semester.

The aptitude test itself takes place in the period from February to March 2021. Depending on the development of the pandemic, we hope to be able to realize the aptitude tests on site. Some departments, such as visual communication and product design are currently looking for digital solutions. On this page you will be informed promptly about all current information regarding the implementation of the aptitude test.

Study programs of weißensee academy of art berlin

All design departments (Visual Communication, Product-, Fashion and Textil/Surface Design) are offered as a 4-years Bachelor and a 1-year Master modularised program. The regular duration of study is 8 semesters, 240 ECTS-credits (Bachelor) and 2 semesters, 60 ECTS-credits (Master of Arts).
The Fine Arts Diploma programmes (Painting, Sculpture and Stage/Costumedesign) comprise a standard period of study of ten semesters that are completed with a final "Diplom" exam (300 ECTS-credits) and it is equivalent to a Master Degree. All programmes start with the transdisciplinary Art and design Foundation during the frist year of studies.


The application procedure is the same for all Bachelor's and Diploma programmes. Here you will find the individual steps:

Step 1: Online-Registration for Aptitude Test (Nov 1 - Dec 10)

The application for the undergrade programs, please use only the online application portal of our school. Shortly before the application starts, you will find the link to the application portal here. The online application procedure for undergraduate degree programmes is open again from 01 November - 10 December 2020 for the following winter semester. Note: The portfolio does not need to be uploaded at this time.


Step 2: Submitting the digital portfolio(mid-December - probably mid/end of January, varies according to department and will be announced here at the start of the application process)You will find general information on the portfolio in the brochures (right) and detailed guidelines for the digital folder (corona-related this year) will be sent to you with the invitation!Information on submitting/uploading the digital portfolio will be included in a separate invitation to submit the portfolio, which you will receive no later than 2 weeks after the deadline. With the invitation you may be asked to do a small artistic-practical homework.

Step 3: Aptitude test

(presumably mid-February in the design departments / beginning of April in the fine arts, subject to change!!)

ONLY if you pass the portfolio examination you will receive an invitation to the aptitude test. There you will receive artistic tasks and have an interview with the admissions committee. The aptitude test normally takes place here on site. Due to the pandemic, a new and possibly digital concept for the qualifying examination is currently being developed.


Step 4: Application for study

The submission of all required documents in the original, e.g. the schoolcertificate, takes place only after passing the aptitude test from 01 April - 30 April for admission.

The artistic aptitude test is valid for two years. If you do not pass the aptitude test, you can apply again next year.




If you pass the aptitude test successfully you are allowed/invited to apply for admission at the Berlin Weissensee Art Academy, if you comply with all formalities:

1. artistic aptitude (of weißensee)

2. qualification for entrance to German University
that means a Higher Secondary (School) certificate or alternatively special artistic aptitude, applicants without Abitur can also be admitted to study if they prove a special artistic aptitude in the aptitude test. The secondary school  certificate is sufficient for the Fine Arts Programs!

3. proof of practical experiences in a study relevant field,
6-8 weeks internship, except for applicants in our three Fine Arts programs.

4. Proof of sufficient German language skills for international applicants
At the time of application, at least one language certificate corresponding to the completed qualification level A2 must be submitted for all degree programmes. In the case of a positive decision, the examination certificate should be submitted for admission in April:
For the design courses for example Testdaf 4, DSH 2, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, DSD II, the C1 examination certificate of the Goethe-Institut or the UDK in the design study courses, stage and costume design;
For the fine arts of painting and sculpture for example telc B2, Testdaf 3, DSH 1, the B2 examination certificate of the Goethe-Institut or the UDK. At the latest at the beginning of your studies.

Information on admission and matriculation for international applicants

All applicants from Germany or abroad have equal status in the application procedure, provided that international applicants can prove that they have the necessary German language skills. (Exempt are native German speakers and those who have a German Abitur).

All courses and lectures at the weißensee art academy berlin are offered in German only. International applicants must provide proof of at least one language certificate corresponding to the completed qualification level A2 at the time of application. To apply online, the most recent language certificate or a course confirmation of the current language course should be uploaded as a pdf file.

For admission, at the latest at the beginning of the course, the corresponding examination certificate must be submitted.
>For all design courses as well as stage and costume design: either Testdaf 4, DSH 2, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, DSD II, the C1 examination certificate of the Goethe Institute or the UDK.
>For painting and sculpture: either telc B2, Testdaf 3, DSH 1, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, DSD II, the B2 examination certificate of the Goethe Institute or the UDK.

In exceptional cases, a certificate of registration for the language examination or proof of the completed B2/C1 course is also sufficient for admission. Please note that the corresponding examination certificate must be submitted at the latest at the beginning of your studies.

Please note: all necessary certificates and documents must be submitted in form of an officially authenticated translation in German or English. Applicants from the People's Republic of China and Vietnam must include the original certificate confirming that the papers have been pre-checked by the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS).


To enrol into the academy of art Weissensee costs about 330 € twice a year (every term) and includes the ticket for the local transport. No tuition fees are required!
