GLASS - Mold Blowing

Lecturer: Nadania Idriss
Instructors: Julius Weiland (mold-making), Rudy Faulkner (mold-blowing), Jesse Günther (mold-blowing), Zane Hettinga (cold-work)

The focus of this class is on the 2000 year old technique of mold-blowing, to investigate the properties of glass and research concepts involving surfaces, transparency and translucency, light and shadow, and negative spaces. Students
will learn various methods of making molds with plaster and other materials, and
learn to assist the gaffer in blowing glass into the molds. We will also teach the
basics on how to cut and polish glass – cold working techniques.

What does it mean to blow into a mold?

This means shaping the glass by using molds of different materials in a way that is not necessarily possible to make with glass blowing. In other words, making a negative cast of an object and to blow glass into it. We will use plaster mainly but
we will also introduce participants to use other materials, such as metal, found objects or forms made out of wire mesh.

The class will be taught on
Wednesdays from 11:00 to 13:00
for 10 weeks.

We are inviting students to submit a project proposal for consideration due on 18 April, 2018 at

info@berlinglas.org

from which we will chose 5 participants to be in the class for the entire semester. We notify you of your acceptance by email.

You will be responsible for your own materials! The Sculpture department will provide enough plaster and modelling clay for each student. Any more materials will be your responsibility to purchase and have delivered to the studio.

Students will have to bring their own bucket for mixing plaster, which you can keep at the studio during the semester, and clay tools. We will provide each student in the class with a handbook of resource centres in Berlin.

This class is meant for investigation and experimentation.
Please do not be discouraged if your ideas are not working out.
Glass takes time to learn, so come instead with the intention to learn something new and have fun along the way! Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes that you wont mind if it becomes covered in plaster!
