Greendesign 7.0 - Material Cycles

Prof. Susanne Schwarz-Raacke
Prof. Heike Selmer
Prof. Lucy Norris

- Materialforschung und –entwicklung: Betrachtung des gesamten Lebenszyklus von Materialien, von der Produktion bis zur Wiederaufbereitung;

Summer Term 2018
GREEN DESIGN 7.0 - Material Cycles

Our natural fossil resources such as oil, coal, natural gas, metals and minerals are limited, while the pressure on the material use of renewable raw materials continues to increase. How can we change the way we design, produce, consume and dispose of materials to live within our planetary boundaries?

During the project we will develop strategies and solutions for dealing with dwindling resources and thinking in material cycles in experimental investigations. Within the framework of the symposium, the workshops and the individual semester projects, greenlab and the participating students will explore the possibilities of natural and artificial materials, biological and technical cycles, small-scale or industrial production methods, closed-loop and open-source systems and the various dimensions of circularity from local to global. Cultural concepts such as the contrast between“natural” and“artificial” are called into question when we look at the opportunities that new areas such as biotechnology offer us for developing sustainable materials, products or services.

The project begins with a symposium on 13 April 2018 dealing with critical issues and developments in the field of sustainable cycle design. The international symposium will examine the various concepts, strategies and practices from the perspective of designers, technologists and practitioners working in the field of ecological design and environmental services. The focus is on innovative concepts, practical developments and the social and economic potential of sustainable and ecologically compatible production, the role of design in this context, and the effects of these practices on our everyday lives.

The symposium will deal with five sub-themes:
Materials research and development: consideration of the entire life cycle of materials, from production to reprocessing;
State-of-the-Art Strategies for Recirculating Design
Different dimensions of circularity - from local to global
Closed loop and open source systems
Visions and experiments with a special focus on the possibilities of biotechnology
