11 Mental maps Kreuzberg (Public art installa
The project '11 Mental Maps Kreuzberg' deals with subjective notions of the Berlin's neighbourhood Kreuzberg. Inspired by Yi-Fu Tuan's idea that experience is at the heart of what place means, my interest lies in how places are perceived through personal experiences, feelings and everyday life practices of the individual. The work concentrates on the mundane image of Kreuzberg; its everyday reality perceived by a group of residents through their everyday practices and experiences.
To approach this matter I have used the method of mental mapping by asking a group of 11 people to produce mental maps of Kreuzberg, that is, to map their personal Kreuzberg. They were supposed to map places to which they are attached; e.g. places that evoke memories, feelings and experiences and to note why are this places of importance to them. Based on these information, I have created one (joint) mental map of Kreuzberg as well as 31 street signs, which are put in the public space of Kreuzberg. The content of the signs are the notes from the mental maps, that refer to the certain mapped place.
As the information in the maps was based on everyday practices and very personal experiences, my aim was to provide another representation of Kreuzberg and show its ordinary, everyday image.
