Body Language of Machines

Aktuell geben Displays, Lichtsignale oder Warntöne Auskunft über die Befindlichkeit von technischen Systemen. Die menschliche Wahrnehmung ist nur begrenzt in der Lage, diese Signale parallel zu verarbeiten. Künftig werden viele Objekte um uns herum autonom: Das bedeutet, dass sie neben ihrem Status oder Modus auch ihre Intention kommunizieren müssen, damit Koexistenz oder sogar Kollaboration mit ihnen möglich wird.

 

Vor diesem Hintergrund versuchte das Projekt „The Body Language of Machines“ experimentell auszuloten, inwieweit Animationsprinzipien wie sie z.B. Walt Disney entwickelt hat, auf Hardware übertragbar sind: Wie spielen Körperhaltung, -bewegung und Gesten zusammen, um ohne Worte mit seiner Umwelt zu kommunizieren? Können Objekte diese Sphäre der nonverbalen, physischen Interaktion nutzen, um an intrinsische Verhaltensmuster anzuknüpfen bzw. welche physischen Ausdrucksformen bilden sinnfällige Redundanzen mit anderen Kommunikationsformen?

Möglichkeiten z.B. im Bereich der „Soft Robotics“ erlaubten es, neue organische Formen der Artikulation und der nonverbalen Kommunikation mit autonomen Systeme zu entwickeln und prototypisch umzusetzen. Neben der Definition von sinnfälligen Anwendungsbereichen sollte das Projekt die Visualisierung und Narration von Prozessen bzw. Interaktionsszenarien gezielt trainieren.

 

Das Projekt wurde durch das eLAB sowie einen professionellen Storyboard-Zeichner unterstützt.

 

 

Currently displays, light signals and warning sounds convey the status of technical systems. But the human perception is limited when it comes to an increased level of signals that need to be processed simultaneously.
There is now an expectation that many objects around us will become autonomous in the near future. As a result these objects need to start communicating not only their status or modus, but also their intentions. As this would be essential for a successful coexistence and even more important if we consider so-called „cobots“ engaging in sophisticated collaborations with us.

 

The project „Body Language of Machines“ aimed at applying the animation techniques of Walt Disney to the design of physical objects in order to explore whether physical gestures can facilitate nonverbal communication with machines. Would this allow to tap into intrinsic patterns of physical behavior without burdening the processing capacities of the human brain or at least provide soothing redundancies with other channels of perception?

 

The field of soft robotics served as a source of inspiration to create new organic interaction concepts with autonomous systems. The aim is to prototype and experience these concepts as well as to describe potential fields of applications.

The project also put a particular emphasis on training narrative visualization skills for processes and interactive scenarios.

We were supported by the eLAB and a professional storyboard artist.
